The sport is adjudicated by two umpires, aided by a 3rd umpire and match referee in worldwide matches. Before a match begins, the staff captains toss a coin to determine which staff will bat first and so take the primary innings. In every innings, one group bats, trying to score runs, while the opposite staff bowls and fields the ball, trying to limit the scoring and dismiss the batters. When the first innings ends, the teams change roles; there could be two to 4 innings depending upon the kind of match. A match with four scheduled innings is performed over three to five days; a match with two scheduled innings is often accomplished in a single day.
